double up food bucks

Look for this logo while shopping :)
Eating, and buying, local often seems daunting because of the price tag. Double Up Food Bucks is a healthy foods incentive program that doubles the money a person has to purchase locally grown foods. If you or someone you know uses SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), and that money is used at participating locations, the value spent will be matched with additional dollars which can be used to purchase locally grown fruits and vegetables. The goal is to help low-income families eat healthier food, help local growers and farmers gain new customers, and to keep more food dollars in the local economy.

As of 2016, eighteen states were actively involved in the initiative (click here to find a program near you, or to contact the folks that started it to get help bringing Double Up Bucks to your own community.)

If you live in central Iowa, visit Eat Greater Des Moines for a list of participating locations. You can also visit the Healthiest State Initiative, regardless of where in Iowa you may live, for more information and additional locations.

Guac on, and all my best,
Clarissa
